Beowulf Essay Conclusion Example For Students

Beowulf Essay Conclusion The introduction is about learning who the people are and where they are from and what countries they rule. They introduce Hrothgar, he is the king of Denmark. Grendel is the demon. He only comes out at night to fight. In one night he killed about thirty people, men. Hygelac is the king of Scandinavia. He automatically assumes that Hrothgar needs help so he gets fourteen of his finest soldiers ready to go to Hrothgars kingdom to fight Grendel. I think that they are saying that the Grendel has gone into Hygelacs kingdom. He was looking for the king; or Hygelacs men went into Hrothgars kingdom looking for Grendel. Hygelacs are taking a boat and waiting at the shore of Hrothgars kingdom, for the Grendel. Hygelacs men go to Hrothgars kingdom and meet up with Wulfgar; the kings main man or right hand. Wulfgar is saying that he hopes and wants them to help him and king Hrothgar fight the Grendel. Wulfgar takes them, Hygelacs men, to king Hrothgars castle, for a meeting with him. Beowulf talks with king Hrothgar. Beowulf says he will be able to defeat Grendel. Unferth is jealous because Beowulf is bigger, better, stronger and has more experience in fights. Its about Unferth telling what he remembers of the battle of Beowulf and Breca, but Unferth leaves out a few things and Beowulf tells his side of the story. Beowulf says that he felt bad for Breca and because he got so tired of fighting sea beasts; thats why Breca won the race. It shows that Beowulf has a heart and he has compassion. Unferth is jealous because Beowulf has most of the attention and Unferth doesnt have much. Hrothgar throws a party for Beowulf as a way of saying good luck in you battle and telling Beowulf hes the only guy he trust to protect his castle and kingdom. Beowulf gets ready for battle and pretends to sleep in his armor as his way to try and lure Grendel in. Grendel shows up and sees the men sleeping on the floor, and thinks that its dinnertime. He eats on soldier and then comes to Beowulf. Beowulf and Grendel are fighting in the castle and Beowulf isnt letting go of Grendel so he cant leave. Grendel realizes that hes getting weak and tired so he knows hes been defeated because Beowulf ripped his arm off. Grendel then goes running away to hide and die. Beowulf gives Grendels arm to Hrothgar as a trophy. The next morning people are talking about the battle between Grendel and Beowulf, and all the men that moved to live on the outer border of the kingdom are coming back. Hrothgar throws a thank you party for Beowulf and he proclaims Beowulf as his son and now heir to the throne. Beowulf then nails the arm to the wall and makes a scene about how Grendel wont be coming back to kill anymore. The people of the kingdom finally get a good night sleep in twelve years.

Martin luther king jr. 6 Essay Martin Luther king Jr., is a person with such a status in history, every one knows his name. He grew up in a time where every southern state was segregated. He grew up in a religious family and was ordained a minister at the age of 17; thus began his life of fighting for the betterment of mankind. He became known for his public speeches and ability to get points across in nonviolent ways. His speeches where monumental because they offered promise to oppressed people, and a nonviolent means to achieve it. He was a powerful speaker and became a figure head for large movements for the civil rights of blacks in the South. One of his many achievements began in 1955 after Rosa Parkes was arrested for not giving up her bus seat for a white person. He was asked to lead the bus boycott in Montgomery, and achieved his goal of desegregating busses. Building on the success of the Bus Boycott, King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and emphasized the importance of black voting rights when he spoke at the Lincoln Memorial during the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom. Kings renown grew as he became Time magazines Man of the Year and, in December 1964, the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Among many other things he also organized huge rallies against poverty. Early in 1968, he initiated a Poor Peoples campaign designed to help economic problems that had not been addressed by early civil rights reforms. Kings overall effectiveness in achieving his goals where limited because of divisions among blacks. He also encountered resistance from national political leaders. The FBI director J. Edgar Hoovers extensive efforts to undermined Kings leadership grew during 1967 as urban racial violence increased and King criticized American intervention in the Vietnam war. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, while seeking to assist a garbage workers strike in Memphis. After his death, King remained a controversial symbol of the African-American civil rights struggle, praised by many for his work and condemned by others for his militancy and insurgent views. Census 2000 Essays - Survey Methodology, Sampling, Demography

Census 2000 The plan for the 2000 census will make an unprecendent effort to contact every living person living in the United States and will contact more people than in any previous census. With statistical methods for nonrespondents, the Census 2000 will be the most complete accounting of the U.S. population ever. Statistical Sampling should not be a partisan issue . It is an American issue. It's about making sure that every American really and literally counts. It's about gathering fair and accurate information that we absolutely have to have if we are going to determine who we are and what we have to do to prepare all our people for the 21st century. We do a census every 10 years. Even the first time, when Thomas Jefferson sent federal marshals on horseback, we relied on the system of going to the households to count these people (Riche 34). As the years continued on and the population grew, It began to be more time consuming and progressively more expensive. In 1970, we started counting people by mail. We asked that Americans fill out the census forms and then send them back for processing (Riche 34). This is the current method in use. We know that the census missed 8 million Americans living in inner-cities and in remote rural areas in 1990 (Clinton par.3 ). We also know that we double-counted 4 million Americans, many of whom had their own home (Riche 34). The census missed 482,738 in the state of Texas; 66,748 of them in Houston alone (Clinton par. 3). With the current method of the census, the problem are not getting solved. Congress concluded in 1990 that the census failed on two grounds: It cost too much and measured two few people (Riche 35). Inaccurate information causes some of the biggest problems. For example, the United way recieves generous grants for very wealthy individuals. If the census is inaccurate, then it has an indirect effect on private investments of peoples' and governments' investments as well (Clinton par. 6). More than half of the under-counted in the last census were children(Clinton Par.4). A disproportionate number of under-counted Americans were minorities. That means some of our most vulnerable populations routinely are omitted when it comes time to providing federal funds for critical services (Riche 35). An inaccurate census distorts our understanding of the needs of our people and, in many respects, diminishes the quality of life not just for them, but for the rest of us as well (FAQ of statistical sampling). The WIC program is a great example. The Congress and the President have had a good success in getting a bypatisan majority to put more money into the program. But the funds, once appropriated, can only flow where they're needed if there is an accurate count of where the kids are (Clinton par.9). So, ironically, no matter how much money we appropriate for WIC, unless we actually can track where the children are, the program will be less than fully sucessful(Clinton par. 9). Hispanic Americans are expected to triple in the next 50 years, comprise almost 100 million residents( Census Report 1994). And interestingly, those populations are located in five of the six largest states of this country--Texas being one of them. Those five states comprise 170 electorial votes, 63 percent. In fact there is another 8 states that have large Hispanic populations. It is very possible that Hispanics hold the key to the future to the electorial college and the presidency. Getting an accurate count for aid is vital to this district which is composed of about 100,000 hispanic (1990 Census). Cost is another problem with the current method. In 1970, using the number of households counted divided into the total cost of census and adjusting for inflation, the cost was 10 dollars per household (Riche 35). The 1990 census cost 25 dollars (Riche 35). The census is very critical to the budget. The cost is staggering-- $4 billion is what expected in the year 2000 (FAQ of statistical sampling). And, again, that includes sampling. So we know if sampling is not allowed for, that cost may even rise another $700 milllion (Riche 35). Thats's a staggering amount, yet at the same-- the repercussions are

nature versus nurture essays

nature versus nurture essays Nature versus Nurture: What shapes us and how do we become the people we are today? Everyday children are born; millions of new lives start each day, throughout the world. The growth and the development of these children, has been a topic of confusion and debate for years. Many psychologists are argued over what factors make up the person we are, whether they are biological or environmental. Different theories and conclusions have been drawn over what exactly shapes us, and what effects us from birth through adulthood. Though by studying the differences between theories I was able to draw from each and come up with my own conclusions about development and the nature versus nurture debate. I believe that only through knowledge of many theories are you able to get a clear understanding of development, and then only are you able to really analyze and come to your own conclusions. Once I was done studying the different theories and comparing this to my own thoughts and personal experiences with children I was able to come to my own conclusions about development I ha ve believe that nurture is much more influential on a childs development than nature is. Infants are born with about one hundred billion nerve cells. All of these nerve cells have not yet made the important connection, which determine a persons social, emotional, and intellectual make-up. Most of the connections are made in the first three years of a humans life. These connections are the most important and whoever and whatever comes in contact with the child will have an effect on them. Infant brain cells are constantly making connections and sending and receiving information from other cells. The signals which are sent and received travel from cell to cell by chemicals such as serotonin. The electrical impulses move over the synaptic gap and to the dendrites, then move down the axon to the terminal buttons, here the information is sent to another ce...

Streets of London (by Frank Mc Tell) essays

Streets of London (by Frank Mc Tell) essays Streets of London (by Ralph Mc Tell) How to explain the songs popularity Ralph Mc Tells song Streets of London is about the everyday poverty which we, the healthy and wealthy part of our society, dont seem to recognize. The song tells the story of an old, impecunious man who used to be a successful seaman, a hero. In the past, the old man was respected and admired by the society, but in the same way his medal ribbons fade, the societys memory of the former hero fades. Ralph Mc Tell is able to make us feel guilty and responsible when listening to his song as he sings about a man who was once a decent, hard working person like most of us are. We can see ourselves in the old mans wretched position and that makes us feel frightened and pensive. Most people think that poverty only exists in Third World Countries, where there is not enough to eat and the water is polluted but Ralph Mc Tell doesnt sing about the enormous poverty of millions of people in Africa or Asia, he sings about the (individual) poverty we can find in our neighbourhood and in our own family. He makes us aware of the seriousness of poverty and due to the fact that each one of us could end like the old man in the song, we suddenly worry about the poverty described by Ralph Mc Tell. The song blames us for ignoring the lonely and poverty- stricken persons who live in our city, village or vicinity (let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London). An other reason for the songs immense popularity is, in my eyes, that Ralph Mc Tell uses many symbols in his song (yesterdays papers telling yesterdays news, looking at the world over the rim of his teacup). Only by analysing the song very carefully, we can really understand what it tries to tell us. We realise that the persons mentioned in the song do not have any responsibility for thei...
